This adds legitimacy to the stories and shows us that there is a group out there that knows who we love. In Pride, a film about homosexual activists in the United Kingdom, Andrew Scott plays Gethin, a gay bookshop owner. In 2013, Scott revealed that he was gay. He did, however, praise the film for portraying queer people as being praised for their “kindness, bravery, and compassion.”

MJ Rodriguez

In the smash FX series Pose, trans actress MJ Rodriguez played Blanca Evangelista, a role that created history because it featured a high number of LGBTQ+ cast members. MJ then made history by becoming the first transgender actor to win a Golden Globe for her part in the show, winning the award for Best Actress in a Drama TV Series.

Dan Levy

Dan Levy and his father, Eugene Levy, co-created the popular comedy Schitt’s Creek. He plays David, a man whose sexuality is flexible but who marries his boyfriend Patrick towards the end of the series. Levy claimed that he came out to his parents when he was 18 years old. He even stated explicitly in the show that there was no homophobia. His character’s same-sex romance was also mainstream.

Conversations With Friends is a new BBC/Hulu sitcom starring Sasha Lane as Bobbi. Despite the fact that her character is a lesbian, Sasha’s sexuality is more fluid, possibly pansexual. “I love who I love,” she says, adding that love for her is not gender-based.

In 1997, Rupert Everett portrayed George, Julia Roberts’ openly gay best friend in My Best Friend’s Wedding. Actors who identified as LGBTQ+ and played characters that shared their sexuality were uncommon at the time. At the time, he believed it would be his final performance in the part. Instead, it was “a complete turning point,” demonstrating the power of being honest about who you are.

Tessa Thompson

Valkyrie is canonically bisexual in the Marvel comics and is in a relationship with a woman.
