There is no doubt that dyed and decorated eggs are a staple of Easter. Egg dyeing kits, while convenient, can be expensive. This year, save some cash and ditch the fake stuff by dying brown or white hard-boiled eggs with the fresh produce and spices you already have in your kitchen.
How to make Easter egg dye at home
The steps to make natural easter egg dye at home are very simple. Just follow these steps:
- Combine 1 qt of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in a medium pot.
- Bring to a boil and add dye ingredients for the egg color of your choice. Lower heat and let simmer for 30 minutes.
- Let cool. Filter the dye to remove any food fragments.
- Add the eggs to the strained dye and let soak for at least 30 minutes. When it reaches the desired color, remove the egg with a tongs and blot dry with a paper towel.
So, how to create natural color for easter eggs?
Get your desired coloration by adding these ingredients to the mixture of water and vinegar, then following the four steps outlined above.
Red/dark pink eggs
Add 4 cups chopped beets and follow the instructions above.
Orange eggs
Add 4 cups of yellow onion skin and follow the instructions above. For a brighter orange, let the egg soak the dye overnight.
Yellow
You only add 3 tablespoons of turmeric and follow the instructions above.
Dark blue
Simply add 4 cups of blueberries and follow the guide above.
Add 3 cups chopped red or purple cabbage. For a brighter blue color, let the egg soak the dye overnight.

Deep Red
Add peels from 6 purple onions. Add 2 cups water and 3 tablespoons white vinegar to the pot. Boil the mixture and simmer for 15 minutes. Let the mixture cool to room temperature and filter the liquid into your vial. Add an egg and soak until you are satisfied with the color. Remove with a slotted spoon and rinse with cool water. Let dry.
Green
Place the spinach leaves in a saucepan and fill it with 2 cups cold water and 4 tablespoons of white vinegar. Bring it into a bowl and follow the steps listed above.
Purple
Pour about a cup of red wine into the jar. Add an egg and soak until you are satisfied with the color. Remove with a slotted spoon and rinse with cool water. Let dry.
Burnt Orange
Boil water in the teapot. Fill the jug with 3 black tea bags and soak for 30 minutes. Allow the water to cool at room temperature. Add an egg and soak until you are satisfied with the color. Remove with a slotted spoon and rinse with cool water. Let dry.
Light Orange
Boil 2 cups of water. Add 4 tablespoons of paprika and white vinegar, and mix until combined. Pour the mixture into the vial and let it cool to room temperature. Add an egg and soak until you are satisfied with the color. Remove with a slotted spoon and rinse with cool water. Let dry.
