New York Rangers: Filip Chytil and His Story

The metamorphosis of Filip Chytil has been the biggest surprise of the New York Rangers’ Stanley Cup playoffs in 2022. He was a mystery during the regular season, a gifted, big-bodied forward who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, according to many. That is no longer the case.

With two goals, including the game-winner, Chytil and Igor Shesterkin were the stars of Game Six. It was his best postseason game and indeed the best game of his career.

The 21st overall pick in the 2017 first round has seen his status rise and fall. His early success has resulted in later disappointments in his growth. It’s crucial to keep in mind that the Czech native is still only 22 years old, having been hurried into the NHL when he was just 18 years old. He’s already spent parts of five seasons in the NHL, which is rather impressive for a 22-year-old.

He scored 14 goals as a 20-year-old in 2019-20. And he appeared to be on the verge of breaking out as the Rangers’ potential second-line center. He scored only eight goals in each of the two seasons after that. Chytil demonstrated an inability to win faceoffs, winning only 43 percent of the time.

With the Rangers facing a salary constraint crunch and Ryan Strome set to become an unrestricted free agent.  Chytil’s performance might help the Blueshirts resolve a number of concerns in the future.

The playoffs Begin

This year’s playoff performance has been spectacular. The “Kid Line” of Chytil, Alexis Lafrenière, and Kaapo Kakko was formed by Coach Gerard Gallant. Despite the fact that the trio had previously played together, they seemed to gel under the pressure of the playoffs.

Chytil scored what could have been the game-winning goal in the first game of the playoffs, but it was disallowed due to a questionable goalkeeper interference ruling.

Since then, he has had four goals and one assist in 12 games, averaging 13:31 minutes of ice time.

With a Corsi rating of 52.45 percent, he is the only Ranger on the plus side of possession statistics. When playing 5v5, his expected goals for (xGF) are 7.1, while his expected goals against (xGA) are 7.19. His anticipated goals percentage is 49.68 percent, which is the highest in the club.

The Blueshirts have had 45.31 percent of the high danger chances while Chytil is on the ice, the most of any Ranger outside of Tyler Motte, in a series when the Rangers have been outshot and out-chanced by the Hurricanes. Compare that to Mika Zibanejad (31.33%) and Ryan Strome (31.33%). (36.28 percent ).

Despite playing the seventh most minutes of any Ranger forward, he has 79 scoring opportunities, which is tied for fifth-most on the club with Mika Zibanejad.
