Squid Game Season 2 Confirmed: A Whole New Round Is Coming

Hey Squid Game fans, Squid Game Season 2 is back. On Sunday, Netflix officially announced that it has renewed the Korean drama for a second season, following its record debut. 

This news follows much talk and long-running rumors about potential Seasons 2 and 3, but Sunday’s news has now given the series the green light again.

The streamer’s announcement included a letter from the series’ director, screenwriter, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk. “It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,” he wrote. “It took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

He added: “As the writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”

Hwang’s statement continued by shedding a bit of the story for the sequel, revealing that protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and masked villain Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) ) will all return.

In addition, he also promised to introduce Young-hee’s (an ominous giant doll) boyfriend, Cheol-su, into the second year season. As for the man in the suit with ddakji, he “might be back.”

The sSquid Game Season 2 is essentially a foregone conclusion after the massive success of the Korean series on Netflix. By a long shot, the first season marked the streamers’ biggest-ever TV show, reaching 1.65 billion hours watched in its first four weeks since its release last fall.

After Hwang hinted at a second season within weeks of the show’s breakthrough, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has officially confirmed more episodes will be available in January. Hwang has since indicated that a sequel could be a short one, saying the episodes are likely to premiere near the end of 2023 or early 2024.

Squid Game is the biggest show to launch on Netflix to date. This is the first Korean film to reach No. 1 in the US Top 10. Ninety-five percent of Squid Game viewers come from outside of Korea. At its peak, it was #1 in 94 countries – every country in the world where Netflix had a Top 10 list.
